Furhat Robotics launched its face-swapping social robot after many years of development and prototyping, which began at the Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm, Sweden.
Unlike the majority of robots, Furhat isn't built with any particular purpose in mind. In fact, that's the whole point!
Furhat is a social robot that communicates with us humans as we do with each other - by speaking, listening, showing emotions and maintaining eye contact.
It can look and sound like all kinds of different, virtual people; it can take on any number of personalities
Each Furhat Robot can display complex expressions without the mechanical limitations of other technologies. Furhat comes with a selection of pre-built expressions and gestures which can be further customized to fit any character.
This advanced platform uses Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Human Robot Interaction (HRI), and Cognition to engage and interact with people in a human-like manner.
Furhat comes with a suite of powerful tools to create new faces and gestures, capture expressive movement from users, curate coordinated performances, head movements, voice, and facial expressions, enabling developers and designers to make full use of all Furhat’s expressive capabilities.
Furhat has high performance computer vision models for tracking and analysing multiple faces with a high definition wide-view camera.
This comes with very accurate estimates of head pose and depth. We've also developed complex spatial and situation models that allow developers to easily handle multiple users stating and interacting with the robot.
Furhat comes with support for microphones, microphone arrays, and of course, cameras. It also has high fidelity simulations of sensory input.
Each Furhat comes with support for several speech recognition systems supporting up to 40 languages, and one of the world's largest collection of synthesised voices in up to 40 languages
Furhat includes an SDK that is very open, flexible, and elastic. This means that developers can easily integrate external natural language processing and understanding tools. Additionally, Furhat comes with a machine learning powered Natural Language Understanding tool that has some of the world's most capable context modelling features, using intents, entities.
Furhat has a swappable "human" face capable of displaying a variety of gestures and expressions to create human-like engagement.
Imagine a future without bias enabled by humanised technology.
Coaching your employees in real-life situations is empowering.
Instead of tapping at a screen in McDonald's to order a meal, Furhat could take your order, and being aware of the context, listen to the adult and not their children calling for ice cream!
Furhat can extend your customer-service team and be part of your workforce management solution - as it never gets angry, bored, frustrated, hungry or tired.
Furhat could make reading for you and your children more fun and engaging by taking on multiple faces of characters and using different voices.
Additionally, Furhat could help improve comprehension, acting as a teaching aid to explain about different characters, story plot, and more. It can also help with new vocabulary and pronounciation.
Instead of visiting a price comparison website, Furhat could act as your travel agent interacting with your in real-time.
It could ask questions to understand more specifically what you are looking for i.e. whether you want to have an active holiday with excursions, or something more sporty, or just a beach holiday to relax, recharge, and sunbathe.
Furhat could act as a concierge in hotels, hospitals, and other public places providing information and assistance to guests and visitors - as part of a team.
Furhat can be used to provide mental health support and counselling services, making patients feel "less judged" and able to engage without embarrassment.
Furhat could help you learn a language, conversing with you in real-time in a way a book, podcast or smart app can't. It can help with pronunciation and vocabulary.
We will display answers to the most frequently asked questions, so everybody benefits.

FurhatOS is Furhat Robotics Operating System for social robotics. The primary duty of FurhatOS is providing the runtime environment that enables sophisticated social robotics applications. It also includes a set of modular subsystems that handle facial animation, motion functions, sensory perception, audio processing, vision, I/O, cloud service integration, and operations & maintenance functions.
Furhat Robotics releases FurhatOS updates on a monthly cadence.
FurhatOS is distributed as a structured set of Linux packages supporting standard Linux package management operations and commands.
Every Furhat Robots has a number of skills or capabilities which are used to create social robotics applications.
A Virtual Furhat provides a simulated environment in which the skill can be run, and
where all of it's features can be logged, tested, and viewed - for demonstrations and production-ready social robotics applications.
Yes! Furhat SDK (software developers kit) includes all of the developer tools, API’s, tutorials and documentation enabling developers to create skills for the Furhat platform.
Developers can develop skills using the Kotlin programming language and hook into the rich API set offered by FurhatOS.
Furhat SDK also provides IDE integration, and a Virtual Furhat environment that enables skills to be developed, hosted, executed, and debugged on the developer’s workstation before they are deployed to a physical robot system for final testing and deployment.
The Furhat Robot has a swappable human-like face mask which is very expressive.
Each Furhat Robot is shipped with one adult face model with 10 individual textures, which allows for a wide array of male and female character faces.
Furhat Robotics will extend the standard set of face models over time.
Every Furhat Robot has a number of built-in gestures which will be extended.
Currently, the following gestures are supported:
Furhat Robotics plans to release additional tools that enable robot owners and designers to create their own custom gestures and easily deploy these to robots.
FurhatOS currently supports 40+ spoken languages including male, female and (in selected cases) child variants. This list is continuously being extended.
FurhatOS supports both on-board voices (from Acapela & Cereproc), as well as cloud based voices from Amazon Polly*. FurhatOS has specific pluggability support which enables us to easily extend to additional cloud based voices as needed.
The following languages are supported:
*including Neural and Newscaster style voices
Every Furhat Robot recognises 120+ spoken languages and variants using sophisticated Speech Recognition skills built into FurhatOS.
Out of the box support for both Google Cloud Speech-To-Text as well as Microsoft Azure Cognitive Services Speech-to-Text services.
The following languages are recognised:
